Australia citizenship residence caps your time outside Australia at 365 days in any rolling 1461-day period. The statute attaches its consequence at 366 days or more, so 365 is the last safe count. Four years lawful residence with no more than twelve months absent, and no more than ninety days absent in the year before applying.

Who it applies to

This matters most if you are:

The rule โ€” and why it exists

Absence in the last 4 years. At most 365 days outside Australia in any rolling 1461-day period โ€” written as <=365 AWAY / 1461.

Absence in the last 12 months. At most 90 days outside Australia in any rolling 365-day period โ€” written as <=90 AWAY / 365.

Both limits must hold at the same time; the calculator checks each.

Why it exists: residence and citizenship are granted to people who actually live in the country. Presence requirements and absence caps are how that is measured rather than asserted.

Counting the days

  1. On any given day, look back over the 1461 days ending on that day (that day included).
  2. Count every day you were physically outside Australia in that span. Partial days count as full days.
  3. The total must stay at or below 365. Repeat for every day โ€” there is no reset date.
  4. A day only stops counting once it is more than 1461 days old. Leaving and returning changes nothing.
  5. A day with no record might have been a qualifying day abroad, so the calculator reports unknown days separately and treats the total as a floor, never a guess.
